#hashtag is a modular, interactive piece created by myself, Hyungsoon, Joo, and Danyi Wang. The piece was displayed in six mounted iPads during the multimedia exhibition Are We Content? in Savannah, Georgia, May 2014.
The number sign, or “#,” is a metadata tag that precedes messages and enables their grouping on social media and blogging sites. To remove the symbol from its context in social media and provide new formal and conceptual meaning, each artist created two interactive explorations of the “#.”

• Hashtag 01: When the nine squares in the center are clicked, animations are triggered in all corresponding squares throughout the composition. This grouping references the digital function of the hashtag. When the middle button is clicked, the composition flickers and rotates, adding formal interest.
• Hashtag 02: This exploration provides the title of the exhibit (#hashtag) in two states that are formally deconstructed through interactions with the horizontal bands.
