These boards were created during the 2013 SCAD Inspire Workshop with Nickelodeon. I served as team lead on this collaborative project with Angelica Sorauf, Daniel Visconti, and Jessica Henry. Our job was to create boards for the launch kit of a new show. We had approximately 1.5 days to complete the brief.
Breadwinners is about two “quazy” ducks named Sway Sway and Buhduece who use their Rocket Van to deliver bread to the inhabitants of “Pondgea.” Our primary objective in establishing a concept for the launch kit was to express the unique flavor of the show through the personalities of the “quazy” characters and the world they inhabit. Our promotional kit uses playful, funny storytelling through the elements of exaggeration and surprise, which mirrors the show’s approach and is a hallmark of the Nickelodeon brand.
The heroes of the show are the characters. We capture their personalities by exaggerating their unique quirks, often using the tongue as a transitional and typographical device to achieve this characterization.
Highly saturated background colors and patterns from the show itself creates an authentic and high energy backdrop for the typography. The variety of colors and elements within the frames, as well as extreme scale manipulation, references the show’s non sequitur storytelling style.
Network ID: We used a series of surprising reveals to show Pondgea’s inhabitants and their obsession with bread. The Nickelodeon logo is ultimately the product of this “reverse food chain.”
Title Cards: To build excitement, the title cards utilize character catchphrases and dynamic visuals that play with extreme scale.
Endpages: The endpages echo the treatment from the title cards to further reinforce the brand messaging.
Lower Thirds: The characters deliver the text for the lower thirds in a manner that reveals their extremely playful personalities.
